RECTUM + ANUS

Description:

After the sigmoid colon, the stool is stored in the rectum, and will eventually exit the body through the anus. At the end of the anus is a voluntary muscle called the sphincter which releases waste as needed. The anus is surrounded by fascia tissues as well as veins that allow the movement of lymph nodes.

Diseases and Conditions

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Chronic inflammation which includes diseases like Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. It can lead to Anal fistula (where there is an irregular channel for stool to exit the body).

Rectal prolapse

Protrusion of the rectum into the anus caused by straining, which can cause the loss of stool.

Hemorrhoids

These can either be within the body or outside, and they are bulging blood vessels that can lead to anal bleeding.

Anal herpes / Anal warts

Caused by the sexually transmitted diseases HSV-1/HSV-2 and HPV, it produces sores and infections on the outer edge of the anus.
