A group of 80 bones that include the following:

  • 28 in the skull, which contains 8 cranial bones, 14 facial bones, and 6 auditory bones

  • The hyoid bone, which holds up the tongue

  • 26 Vertebrae, which from top to bottom include the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, as well as the sacrum and coccyx

  • 25 bones in the Thoracic Cage, which include 24 rib bones and a central sternum 

Diseases and Conditions

Disc Herniation

Because the lumbar spine must support the entire body, if too much stress is put on it, it can pinch the sciatic nerve, leading to pain or numbing with a condition called sciatica.

Cervical Spondylosis

Type of OA that degenerates the neck muscles due to compression. 

Scoliosis

Abnormal curvature of the spine that may be hereditary.
