BRONCHI + BRONCHIAL TREE
Description:
After the trachea divides in two, they become the bronchi (bronchus singular). As they divide into smaller branches, it forms the bronchial tree within the lungs. The hyaline cartilage in these branches decreases, culminating in the small bronchioles and ending at the alveoli. Surrounding it is the mucus blanket.
Diseases and Conditions
Bronchiectasis
After inflammation, the bronchi widen and may lead to flare-ups, coughing, and mucus production. The most common cause is cystic fibrosis, and may require a bronchoscopy if severe.
Bronchiolitis
Inflammation common in infants when the bronchioles are clogged with mucus. It is commonly caused by the virus.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
The child may have quick breathing and vomit.
Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm
Caused by the breathing in of cool and dry air, the airways may contract after exercise, leading to wheezing and difficulty breathing.
