HEAD + NECK

Description:

The muscles in this area are in charge of mastication, speaking, and facial expressions. Muscles related with chewing include the temporalis and masseter, and there are four extrinsic muscle groups that help the tongue move. In the eyes, there are six extrinsic muscles for rotation and intrinsic muscles for clear vision. The ear contains the smallest muscle, the stapedius, and muscles here dampen vibrations. In the neck and throat, the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid assist in posture and movement.

Diseases and Conditions

Torticollis

Also called wry neck, this is when the neck becomes twisted, causing a tilting of the neck, stiffness, and pain. It is caused by the tightening of muscles on one side.

Myofascial pain syndrome

Fatigue or tension in the muscles involved in mastication. Jaw mobility may be hindered and may be caused by bruxism (grinding of teeth) during sleep or meals.

Tinnitus

The perception that there is an audible sound even when there is not. It can be a ringing, clicking, or hissing sound and can either be rhythmic or non-rhythmic. It can be caused by spasms in the inner ear bones like the tensor tympani or the stapedial muscle.

Cervicogenic Headache(CGH)

A Headache that occurs from neck pain, caused by trauma and leads to reduced flexibility and a blurring of vision.
