GENERAL

Description:

While there are three types of tissues that make up the muscles, including the visceral, cardial, and skeletal muscles, this will focus on the skeletal muscles as they are in charge of voluntary movement. Because they are attached to the skeletal system with tendons, the body is able to consciously move. Muscles are made of cylinder-shaped muscle fibers that are covered with connective tissue called epimysium, and that is covered with fascia. Inside the epimysium are bundles of muscle fibers called fasciculus, which are covered with perimysium. Each individual fiber is covered with endomysium. The muscles are striated and multinucleated. In order to contract, muscles rely on sarcomeres (which themselves are made of myofibrils), which involve thicker filaments called myosin, and thinner filaments that include actin, tropomyosin, and troponin. Along with movement, muscles can help maintain posture, transporting blood, and keeping our body at a regular temperature.
