TONSILS

Description:

Lymphatic tissue is located either in the pharynx, mouth, or tongue, and are called the pharyngeal, palatine, and lingual tonsils respectively. Within them are lymphocytes that aid in the immune response. They act as filters and trap pathogens.

Diseases and Conditions

Tonsillitis

The tonsils may inflame if they are overwhelmed by pathogens. Common ones include streptococcus, adenovirus, and the influenza virus. They can either be acute, recurrent, or chronic. It primarily leads to a sore throat and a fever. The tonic may receive a pale coating or exudate.

Mononucleosis

An infection by the Epstein-Barr virus causes flu-like symptoms. It is also called the kissing disease and is common in teenagers.

Hypertrophic tonsils:

The tonsils become enlarged, constricting the flow of air and causing things like louder snoring and sleep apnea.
